Capital One Financial Corp. announced it was shutting down its wholesale lending subsidiary GreenPoint Mortgage and eliminating 1,900 jobs as a result of the disruption in the secondary mortgage markets.

At one time the largest subprime lender in the nation, Ameriquest Mortgage Co. will end its scandal-ridden place in history with a deal between parent ACC Capital Holdings and Citigroup Inc. in the aftermath of last year’s $325 million multi-state settlement that left the quickly diminishing company almost synonymous with deceptive lending practices in the public’s mind.

Now faced with questions about its survival, Countrywide Financial Corp. announced it had borrowed $11.5 billion from a group of 40 banks to fund new loans as company shares continued to fall and Moody's Investors Service downgraded its rating to nearly junk bond status.
